Lido di Volano - Comacchio Beach
Spiaggia di Lido di Volano, lato nord

A wide stretch of fine sand at the northern end of Lido di Volano, nestled between the open sea, sand dunes, and the pine forest of the Po Delta.

What this place is like

At the northernmost end of the Lidi di Comacchio, Volano preserves one of the most natural landscapes on the Ferrara coastline, where the long sandy beach gradually approaches the mouth of the Po di Volano and the environments of the Delta. The shore is wide, with fine sand and a generally sloping seabed, while behind it lies a pine forest of about 169 hectares, belonging to the Po di Volano State Nature Reserve and crossed by walking and cycling paths.

The most isolated sector has a long naturist tradition and in 2007 was also the subject of a specific temporary municipal authorization; that concession, however, applied exclusively to that year's season and cannot be used to automatically consider the current beach authorized. In subsequent years, visitation has continued more informally, while erosion has profoundly altered the most secluded portions of the beach.

Moving away from the establishments, Volano still takes on a decidedly wild character: there are no toilets, refreshment points, or lifeguard services in the remote stretch of the beach, and the presence of driftwood, stranded vegetation, and other materials washed ashore by storms is part of a constantly transforming coastal environment. The Municipality also considers Volano to be one of the areas most affected by erosion, and in 2025 several storms also caused collapses of the natural dune.

It is therefore a place particularly suited for those seeking silence, wide open spaces, and direct contact with the Delta environment, but those wishing to practice naturism must bear in mind that the situation is not comparable to that of nearby Bassona di Lido di Dante: in Volano, as of 2026, there is no specific authorized and designated sector for this practice under a current municipal provision.

Before you go

Naturism authorisation

Tolerated or unofficial

Naturism is customary or tolerated in this area without a specific official authorisation. Be discreet and respect local rules.

Getting there

Reach Via Spiaggia 1 in Lido di Volano and access the beach near Bagno Oveja Negra. Facing the sea, turn left and walk towards the mouth of the Po di Volano until reaching the designated naturist section.

Opening times and seasonality

The beach is free and unmonitored. Storms, dune erosion, and safety measures may temporarily modify access to the northern part of the beach.

Costs

Access is free; parking lots and establishment services in the starting area may be subject to a fee.

Accessibility

The approach is long and takes place mostly on sand; there is no continuous boardwalk leading all the way to the naturist section.

Status and local rules

The naturist area of Lido di Volano originated from municipal authorization no. 53 of July 18, 2007. The authorization was valid only for that year, although visitation has continued. The practice should be maintained within the delimited section at the northern end of the beach, and great care must be taken.
