Stignano nudist beach in autumn

A free naturist beach in the San Fili district on the coast of Stignano, with a level, barrier-free approach.

What this place is like

The naturist beach of Stignano occupies a designated stretch of public shoreline in the Femmina Morta area, in the San Fili district. It is a free-access beach made up of sand and small pebbles, facing the Ionian Sea and located away from the more heavily developed seaside areas.

Municipal signs mark the boundaries within which naturism is permitted. The area is not a managed beach resort, and facilities may be unavailable or only found in nearby areas, so visitors are advised to bring drinking water and adequate sun protection.

The Ionian Sea can become rough, and the water can get deep within just a few metres from the shore. Since there is no lifeguard supervision, caution is required when swimming. The Municipality states that access is free and barrier-free from the road in the San Fili district, while the flat path leading to the beach makes this one of the few naturist beaches in Italy for which the local authority explicitly declares the absence of architectural barriers.

However, beyond what is stated by the Municipality, visitors should be aware that access through the underpasses can sometimes be difficult because the road is in very poor condition. In addition, during the off-season there have been numerous reports of overgrown vegetation obstructing free access. This issue generally does not occur during the summer, when the beach itself is maintained and cleaned.

Naturism authorisation

Officially authorised

Naturism is permitted by an official order, regulation, or indication. Respect the area boundaries and any signs.

Getting there

On State Road 106, between the municipalities of Riace and Caulonia, there is a very wide double bend. Coming from Riace, you will see an old abandoned building on the left, while coming from Caulonia there is a long straight stretch of road. Halfway through the double bend, there is a small track signposted as "Castello di San Fili", which can be accessed by car. Continue straight along this track until you reach the large parking area. After leaving the car, continue on foot through the railway and road underpass, and the beach will open up directly in front of you.

Opening times and seasonality

The beach is free and has no dedicated supervision

Costs

Entry and access to the beach are free.

Accessibility

The municipality describes the approach as free of architectural barriers; usability on the sand can still depend on seasonal walkway installations.

Status and local rules

The Municipality of Stignano established the Femmina Morta naturist section in the San Fili district by a municipal executive resolution of 12 July.
