Where it is
A sandy, dune-backed stretch of the Capalbio coastline, within the nature reserve, frequented for many years and regularly monitored by naturist associations
Macchiatonda beach, along the Capalbio coastline, is one of those places where naturism seems to blend naturally into the surrounding landscape, thanks to a long, largely undeveloped stretch of coast immersed in the wild scenery of the Maremma. The section traditionally frequented by naturists is not officially designated as a naturist beach, yet it has long been a point of reference for those looking for peace, privacy and wide-open spaces: once past the beach clubs and heading south along the shoreline, the number of visitors gradually decreases, making it easy to find a secluded spot while maintaining a comfortable distance from others.
What makes Macchiatonda particularly distinctive is its wild appearance, with dark, iron-rich sand, a mainly sandy seabed and seawater that can appear remarkably clear, partly because the heavier sand tends to settle quickly. Behind the beach, dunes and Mediterranean vegetation form part of the protected environment connected to the Lago di Burano nature reserve, a fragile ecosystem that deserves particular care, especially by avoiding access across the dunes and vegetation.
Access is also easier than at many isolated naturist beaches, although arriving early at weekends is advisable in order to avoid parking difficulties; once the more organised section of the coast is left behind, however, Macchiatonda takes on an entirely different character, becoming a simple and peaceful beach that is especially evocative around sunset, when the dominant elements are the wind, the dunes and the sound of the sea.
Naturism authorisation
Naturism is customary or tolerated in this area without a specific official authorisation. Be discreet and respect local rules.
It can be reached from the public access points along the Capalbio coast, continuing on foot along the shoreline until reaching the section traditionally used by naturists, following the latest directions provided by local associations. The beach is not particularly difficult to find, although a fair amount of walking is required
Free, undeveloped beach in the more secluded section; avoid walking on the dunes and check wind and sea conditions.
Free access; parking areas along the coast may be subject to a fee.
Long walk on the sand and no continuous boardwalks; not fully accessible.
Historically frequented by naturists and supported by naturist associations, but without any specific municipal authorization; the beach is therefore not officially authorized for naturism and some caution is advisable, although historically no particular incidents have been reported.
